Rep. Al Green after censure speaks out
Representative Al Green spoke out after being censured for interrupting President Trump’s address to Congress. He said he would do it again.
WASHINGTON – A Democratic lawmaker from Texas who filed impeachment articles against President Donald Trump during his first term is vowing to do it again within the month.
Rep. Al Green, who was kicked out of the president’s recent joint congressional address for standing and yelling in protest, said at one of the many anti-Trump demonstrations held across the country Saturday that he’ll file the longshot motion in the next 30 days.
“He is a Goliath,” Green said, referring to Trump at a rally in the nation’s capital. “But my friends, my friends, for every Goliath there is a David.”
He continued: “I want you to know, Mr. President, this David is going to bring articles of impeachment against you within the next 30 days.”
Trump was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives twice during his first four years as president. In 2019, his impeachment was prompted by an inquiry from Democrats over allegations he pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to dig up political dirt on Joe Biden; in 2021, he was impeached over charges of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
In both cases, lawmakers in the U.S. Senate ultimately acquitted Trump.
Impeachment articles would have virtually no chance of approval anytime soon in either congressional chamber, both of which are controlled by Republicans.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday on Green’s remarks.
