Durbin, a key figure in the Democratic caucus, has made his mark in Congress, notably endorsing Barack Obama early in the historical 2008 presidential campaign.

WASHINGTON – Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker announced on Friday he is endorsing his Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton for U.S. Senate, just two days after Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, 80, said he won’t seek reelection in 2026.
Durbin’s decision to leave kickstarts what is expected to be a competitive primary among Illinois Democrats who are looking to succeed him. Stratton announced her candidacy on Thursday, arguing that the “old playbook” isn’t working and that “new energy” is needed.
Pritzker, who is widely viewed as a potential 2028 contender, said in a video shared by Stratton on X that she has the “compassion and passion to fight for the working families of Illinois.”
“Donald Trump’s attacking everything that makes us Americans. It is time to fight. This is the moment when people need to stand up and speak out,” Pritzker said. “Juliana is smart, caring, compassionate and a fighter for what’s right. She’s someone who I know will go to Washington to every day think about how to make people’s lives better.”
Stratton has served by Pritzker’s side as lieutenant governor since 2019, touting in her campaign video that the pair have raised the minimum wage, invested in infrastructure and created jobs. Prior to taking on this role, Stratton was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives.
Other potential contenders for Durbin’s seat include Illinois Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Robin Kelly and Lauren Underwood.
